Representing HERGEN, Application Engineer Fernando Winckler Balen presented the lecture “Sustainability and Efficiency in Tissue Machines”, offering a technical and strategic perspective on how modernizing equipment and processes can improve the operational performance of factories while reducing environmental impacts, a central theme for the industry’s competitiveness.
Key challenges and opportunities in the tissue market
During the presentation, Fernando highlighted increasingly relevant challenges for tissue paper manufacturers, such as:

• Demand for higher quality products
• High energy costs
• Need for rational water use
• Operational safety
Based on this scenario, opportunities for improvement that directly impact industrial sustainability were presented, including more efficient refining, formation optimization, advances in drying, use of Crescent Former technology, and reduced garment consumption.

- Adequate and well-sized refining: Correct choice of refining area for each type of fiber, adjusted operational parameters, and possible application of enzymes to reduce energy load.
- Efficiency gains in Approach Flow with double dilution: Solution that allows for lower installed power, more compact systems, and greater operational stability.
- Benefits of Crescent Former technology: Increased machine availability, reduced wear on clothing, reduced breakdowns and energy savings that can reach approximately 35%.
- Optimized forming engineering: Use of instrumentation, non-recirculating manifolds that provide 5% to 7% energy savings, in addition to sizing based on finite element analysis.
- Steel Yankee Dryer and head insulation: Greater heat transfer, operational stability, and lower steam consumption, ensuring high productivity with less environmental impact.
